Oglala Lakota College Library, the only public library on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, coordinates an ongoing project for reservation children to promote reading and literacy. The "Build Your Own Library" project staff visit each reservation community on an annual basis. At each community event all the children from the community are invited for a story time session and book give-away. Once story time is completed the children are offered a selection of age appropriate books from which they can choose titles they would like to take home with them. This project engages children in reading, exposes them to library opportunities, and encourages them to build their own libraries at home.
In order to do this, the library is seeking donations of new and/or very gently used children's books in like-new condition for ages pre-school to 10 years old. Please take a moment to look through your bookshelves at home, purchase some children's books locally or order them online and have them shipped directly to the OLC Library. Be aware that many book vendors often do not let the gift recipient know who sent the books so if you are able to include a gift card message, please note your name and address so they know who made the donation.
In 2009 we partnered with Scholastic Book Clubs as a literacy partner to provide books to children on this reservation through Scholastic's "ClassroomsCare" program. THANK YOU SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUBS!
Thank you very much to all our donors for supporting the OLC Library, and encouraging a lifelong love of reading for the Oglala children of Pine Ridge Indian Reservation!
