Researcher Guidelines

RESEARCH
  • All food, drink, tobacco products and candy are prohibited in the research room.
  • Patrons must properly store all backpacks, briefcases, purses, coats, hats, etc. immediately upon entering the research room. Lockers and a coat rack are provided for storage of personal items. All belongings that are brought into the archives are subject to search by an LRC staff member before they are taken out of the archives, including bound pads of paper used for note taking.
  • Only pencils, paper, portable computers and portable recorders may be used for note taking. Extra pencils and paper are available to borrow while using the research room. Portable computers and recorders are not provided.
  • All archival research must be done at the research table in the archives, with the exception of microform research and when the archivist gives permission otherwise. Reference books in the archives are not to leave the research room.
  • The archivist or a LRC staff person will provide each researcher one box at a time. The LRC staff will do their best to have all requested materials on-hand and be available to take the box the researcher has completed and provide the next one the researcher requests.
  • Keep the existing order of archival materials within each folder and box. Do not lean on books or documents or mark pages in any way, unless with a strip of paper provided by an LRC staff member. If there is any doubt as to the order of materials, suspicion of missing materials, or apparent damage to materials please notify the archivist immediately. When needed, gloves will be provided for the handling of some archival materials (e.g., photographs). Please follow the archivist's instruction regarding any special handling techniques.
SERVICES
  • Make duplication requests with the archivist by filling out a Request for Service form. Materials may be photocopied and/or photoduplicated, but the archives has reasonable restrictions to protect fragile, damaged or restricted materials. OLC abides by all existing copyright laws and will not knowingly violate these laws. Please see the Request for Service form for further information.
  • Oglala Sioux Tribal members are exempt from paying service fees. This exemption may have limitations regarding the quantity of items or services requested, and may be subject to proof of membership by the patron, both at the archivist's discretion.
  • In accordance with US copyright laws, no more than 10% of any book or collection will be photocopied or photoduplicated in the archives.
ACCESS
  • The use of certain collections and materials may be restricted by statute, by office of origin, by the archives, or by the donors. The researcher assumes full responsibility for fulfilling the terms connected with any restricted material. For the protection of its collections the archives reserves the right to restrict the use of materials which are not arranged or are being arranged, materials of exceptional value (cultural or monetary), and especially fragile materials.
  • The archivist reserves the right to request a valid form of ID from patron and to refuse service to any individual who does not comply with request, or who knowingly violates any of these guidelines.
  • In giving permission to copy, quote from, or publish a manuscript or other material, the archives does not surrender its own right to print such material or to grant permission to others to print it. The researcher assumes full responsibility for the use of the material and for conformity to the laws of libel and copyright or publication rights and restrictions. Please see the Request To Publish form for further information.
