About the Collections

The Archives is home to four major collections: the administrative records of Oglala Lakota College, Oglala Sioux Tribe records, historical records of the American Indian Higher Education Consortium, and Bureau of Indian Affairs Records of Pine Ridge Agency. In addition we have a limited amount of manuscript collections, the bulk of which are papers of former OLC faculty and staff. Copies of historical papers and photographs held at other archival institutions around the US and abroad which document Oglala history have also been gathered. Collectively these items document the social history of the Oglala Lakota people, circa 1800 - present.

Oglala Lakota College Records: These include President's Office records, course catalogs and schedules, and a variety of records from individual college offices.

Oglala Sioux Tribal Council Records: Consists primarily of Tribal Council Minutes, Resolutions, and Ordinances circa 1935-2003.

American Indian Higher Education Consortium Records: American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC) was founded in 1972 by the presidents of the nation’s first six tribal colleges as an informal collaboration among member colleges.

Bureau of Indian Affairs. Pine Ridge Agency Records: Consists of annuity records (1879), allotment records (1904-1948), tribal census records (1886-1943), law enforcement records (1905-1926: bulk 1910-1925), original field notes and boundary surveys of reservation lands (1875-1905), general correspondence by subject (1905-1926), misc. letters received (1871-1907), correspondence of District Farmer Earl S. Clever (1924-1927), correspondence of District Farmer J.J. Guyer (1932-1934), monthly reports of district farmers (1888-1903), records of various controversies (1867-1907), council proceedings (1875-1894), proceedings of a council to accept reduction of the Great Sioux Reservation (1889), and a council with Rosebud Sioux (1892). These records are copies of originals held at the National Archives and are mainly microfilmed copies with the exception of several handwritten allotment record books and an 1879 annuity book. In addition, the census records have all been digitized and are searchable through Ancestry Library Edition from any college center library computer.
