Barten came to the Pine Ridge Reservation from New York in 1891 to teach.  He later had a mercantile business in Gordon, and was actively engaged in "outfitting reservation Indians for movies, rodeos, and Wild West Shows."  This folder contains his obituary and some miscellaneous correspondence which doesn't easily fit into other folders in this series.

Subject:  This questionnaire was part of the Maurice Frink section of the Walker Papers.  It comes from a period directly preceding the establishment of Oglala Lakota College in 1971.  The Sioux History and Culture class was taught by Gerald One Feather and Amos Bad Heart Bull.  Evelyn Whirlwind Horse was director of Title I and coordinated the class with Black Hills State College.  The class was taught in the spring of 1970 on the Oglala Community School campus in the log building known as "the log cabin" which later served as a central office for Oglala Lakota College, and still later as the central office of the Pine Ridge College Center, OLC.

Subject:  Interviews conducted by Eleanor Hinman and Mari Sandoz concerning the life of Crazy Horse.  The interviews were conducted in the summer of 1930 in preparation for a book Eleanor Hinman planned to write on Crazy Horse.  The book was never written, and Miss Hinman turned her interviews and other notes over to Mari Sandoz who later published Crazy Horse, the Strange Man of the Oglalas.  These notes are now in the Nebraska State Historical Society collection under Miss Hinman's name.

Subject:  Newspaper clippings saved by Mari Sandoz from the Gordon Journal which report daily life "news" from the Pine Ridge Reservation area.  The collection includes three columns from the Wounded Knee area by Will Spindler, and one which focuses upon Oglala and Pine Ridge Village news by May Belle Hockenbary.  There is an article dealing with the St. Margaret's Guild, the then "Indian auxiliary" of St. Marks Episcopal Church in Gordon.  Two articles deal with the problem of prejudice and poverty in Gordon.  One letter from then Chief Judge John Richard complains about the failure of the Gordon police to take two injured tribal members to PHS Hospital in Pine Ridge.  One died.
